Felt copy-ball

In TU Eindhoven my first hands-on tryout intuitively was to try to felt some electronics to create soft and somehow human-friendly interface.

This felt-ball  has a magnetic switch, battery, felted battery-clip, 2 led-s inside, and this simple prototype represents the glow that could be transferred through the felt surface. It represents a concept developed with Martijn ten Bhömer of allowing different kind of communication over distance, where the ball would copy behavior applied to it by one person to the other “twin” ball.

Search For..

is a conceptual crafted scarf-collection promoting principles of Reduce by having a message to the audience as well as to the wearer. It interacts with the environment and to the person that uses it through unexpected pleasant expressions.

It is developed by Kristi Kuusk as part of her MA thesis at Estonian Academy of Arts and an internship project of the Smart Textiles program, Design Research Unit at Interactive Institute.

The collection is made of waste materials from a local knitting factory which are crafted into interactive pieces. Therefore it expressively supports Reusing and Recycling along with the concept of full use of materials. Disposed form of the material is used as a starting point for the inspiration of the collection alongside with the conceptual ideas.

Technology, that is mastered into a message and expressions, is used to express certain feelings and willings.

The collection includes a scarf that reacts to the action of wearer lying down by giving a gentle massage to her neck, a scarf that cherishes the moment of two dear persons meeting by lighting up the environment, a scarf that react to the embracement of silliness and childish by again turning on some magic lights and to see the rest you are welcome to visit the Full exhibition: http://otsides.kristikuusk.com/

LED-dress

LED-dress is made as part of a study in The University of Sao Paulo. The dress lights up when the snowflake worn as a ring gets near the dress. It imitates snow’s different abilities among which is the one of shining in the darkness.

The piece consists of a crocheted skirt and a ring which both contain one side of a magnetic switch that will activate LED-s in the skirt only in case of both sides united
The work represents snow characteristics. On visual side its ability to shine in the dark with some light pointed to it and the shape of a snowflake. On conceptual side it shows that miracles start to happen when two separate parts come together (snowman, houses, slides?!) and protection that both snow and garment provide to its wearer.

Together We Shine

Online Exhibition TogetherWeShine is a conceptual crocheted neck warmer collection designed and prepared by Kristi Kuusk (MA student at Estonian Academy of Arts) and Stela Dias Fernandes (BA graduate at Univesity of São Paulo) to present an idea inspired by snowflakes and love.

TogetherWeShine or JuntosNósBrilhamos in Portuguese or KoosMeSärame in Estonian, neck warmers accessories can be used by mothers and daughters, sisters, friends, grandmothers and granddaughters or by anyone wanting to shine out the “Sparkle” taking over the heart when (re-)united with the loved one.

The collection vividly illustrates how technology, apart from separating people (as commonly agreed and believed), can successfully join them as well. And carries an interesting twist mixing old traditions (croche, knitting) with new technologies (LED, conductive thread, switches) to show how generations (technology, skills, people…) together can function and supporting each other, literally shine.

They have made a collection consisting of pairs of garments, accessories that interact with each other by showing the importance of connections between human relations. Pieces literally light up with LED-s while get connected to each other.
